Could you used another different way to explain 🤔 you did it like if you were explaining to people's that got knowing on this field 🤔 and remember that Could out here someone's that don't have idea what it is.
Perfect! :) 👏👏👏
Where would 37.25 inches be on the measuring tape?
Bro are you joking
At the end it's supposed to be 1/8 and then 1/16 You said it backwards
+@johnlopez3607 Good catch. I do mention the gaff in the description text below. Back when UA-cam has those popup bubbles there was one at that very moment in the video making the correction. Ah well. I hope you found the video helpful in one way or another. Enjoy the day.
I got confused at 16 and 8
Thank you. I am in my 40s and never knew how to read these things properly. That all changed with this video
+@rowenarrow Thanks for watching. What other videos should I make? I'm always looking for new ideas to help people out.
Looks awfully close to the old measurment know as the cubit. Now a days, it's believed that it's approximately a foot and a half or 18 (in) but they've discovered that the old Egyptian cubic was more like 20
As an American carpenter I prefer ours. When you are in GO mode I prefer less lines. We normally just use eighth, quarter, half and three quarters. If it's a 16th we just say an eighth "fat". Or slightly less than a eighth we say "take the line"
Metrisch is gewoon het beste, ik werkte voor een Amerikaanse firma zij zijn overgeschakeld naar metrisch volg hun voorbeeld.
Now that’s what I call a great video thanks a lot. Very insightful and informative.
This is a wonderful explanation. You are a really good teacher. Well done, congratulations, Sir, thank you very much for your help.
+@AntonioGomez-ob9og @AntonioGomez-ob9og Thanks for watching. Glad you liked it. If there are other topics you'd like to see, please reply and let me know.
Can't find 20 1/32
You mis-counted. There are 5 diamonds for every 8ft/96inches. The diamond is actually at the interval of 19.200 inches verses 19.1875 (19 3/16).
+@pathagner2932 did I say diamonds? I thought I said spaces between the diamonds. I’ll have to listen again. Thanks for letting me know.
Reminded me of this Dana Carvey “She’s chopping broccoli” SNL skit: ua-cam.com/users/shorts49yI_2X_pMw?si=i3XXN0SIBszn0UxH

Any video on how to use the body of the tape measurer for end to end inside measure ?
Great idea. I'll add that to my list. Thanks
@@MeasuringMarvels I would appreciate it alot.
i am a 53 yr old american. And i have never used metric measurements. however I want to learn because I want to build a house to retire in using only the metric system. and this video cleared up a lot for me. Thank you. Now I have to go online and buy a metric tape since my box store here in the US does not sell metric tape measures.
Home Depot and Lowes have them but only through their website or app. And it'll be Metric/SAE combo only. For Metric only tape measures, eBay or Amazon is your best bet.
Honestly the American way is simpler and faster for building a home. The metric lines on a tape are so small where as an American one they are easier to see basically. You really just need to know eighths, a quarter, a half and 3/4. 16ths you dont have to worry as much on most things building a home. In the uk, you have to be in a harness when above 6 feet off the ground.
Thanks for the info. Know I know just a little more than before.
thank you so much I needed this I was never taught this growing up my dad tried but it just would not stick in my young head now 45 it makes more sense thank you
sometimes we just need a chance to grow

Let's put it this way you order two pizzas same size pizzas. Now one of them you you slice into 8 equal sized pieces. The next one you slice into 16 pieces also of equal size. Then with pizza will have larger slices. Wow troubling you put this garbage on the internet claiming the smallest readable increment of a tape is 1/8 of an inch. No its 1/16!! Duh just order two pizzas and slice them bud!!
+@trentl9187 @trentl9187, I hope this ended up being helpful. Thanks for watching.
Love how you said half inch quarter inch is next then what did he say... 1/16 of an inch then smallest is 1/8 of an inch? Well isn't 2/16 of an inch equal to 1/8 of an inch. So how can 1/8 of an inch be smaller than a single 16th
+@trentl9187 Good catch. I do mention the gaff in the description text below. Back when UA-cam has those popup bubbles there was one at that very moment in the video making the correction. Ah well. I hope you found the video helpful in one way or another. Enjoy the day.

I just gave up on imperial tape measures in general and all the fractions.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share and show me I never really understood fractions and this is helping
+@neomatrix2722 @neomatrix2722, Thanks for watching, I'm glad it was helpful.
I have always ignored that black diamond
So do I. I've never laid out roof rafters. Thanks for watching.
A diamond belongs on a finger😅😅
And on the baseball field. :-)
Uk 🇬🇧 we've used metric in construction for 40 plus years all we use is metres and millimetres we dont use centimeters just complicates things so 7643 means 7 metres and 643 millimetres not 7 metres 64 centimeters and 3 millimetres 🤔
Good point. I'll mention this in my next metric video. Thanks for watching.
Same in Australia... I've worked in architecture and construction for over 25 years, everything is mm. We also never actually say "millimetres". We say mills or nothing at all. If someones says "cut me a 90x45 stud at 2740" you know exactly what they mean
...and this is why Americans would never go metric :-)
We have so many other things to get straight first. Metric is the least of our worries at the moment.
You teach well, thank you but I still do not understand why the metal piece moves at all. Thanks.
There's a mistake 5/8 comes before 3/4
Good catch. I do mention the gaff in the description text below. Back when UA-cam has those popup bubbles there was one at that very moment in the video making the correction. Ah well. I hope you found the video helpful in one way or another. Enjoy the day.
I have a decimal that I changed into a fraction 0.40 = 2/5. How do I read 2/5" on the tape measure?
With the tape measure I used, you can get close by increasing 2/5ths up to 6/15ths and then look at 6/16ths. Then, 6/16ths simplifies to 3/8ths. There are tape measures that use inches, but have 10ths lines instead of fractions.
We used the diamonds when installing i-beams when building parking garages and buildings, wait until people figure out what the little hole on the end of a tape is for lol
the nail head
I’m fluent with both the imperial (inch) system and metric, but why I would ever want to use imperial over metric I will never know. Just because you do something the harder way doesn’t mean it’s the smarter way 😏
I'm Canadian and most of the guys I work with refuse to use metric even though it's easier to read. lol
It simply is how you were taught, and growing up in the USA we hated the easy way, lol..I was in school when they tried switching to the metric system, and trust me it messed up a lot of our heads, I hated metric…they switched back to the old school way within a few yrs , no one liked it..I personally don’t think imperial is harder in anyway at all..I understand both, and use both, but still I’m a fan of the old school way..at 57, I never thought I’d ever be saying I’m old school, but I guess Father Time changes us all..even if its a 1/4 of a yr at a time..now tell me that’s harder to understand than saying it’s .25 of a yr, ???
Can you answer my question in the comments? Here it is again: I have a decimal that I changed into a fraction 0.40 = 2/5. How do I read 2/5" on the tape measure? @@Slowmo896
Wow Great video man thanks man I’m going to keep studying it
@abrahamvillegas360, Thanks for watching, I'm glad it was helpful.
If you ask your phone a question in deviding a measurement into three, it gives the fraction and the remaining in decimal.
Siri just doesn't understand fractions very well. :-)
Very helpful, thank you very much
@trainersInformation, I hope this ended up being helpful. Thanks for watching.
I think Europe gets triggered because they do not understand imperial, so they get mad and say use metric.
You mean the entire world and not just Europe lol americans
Yep us Americans ,the ones everyone loves to hate, and whine about until they get invaded by Russia, bombed by terrorist or China buys 99% of their debt,or needs free money every yr by the billions while we get taxed to death a 1/4 of a dollar at a time,lol.. ,,@@davidhey52
It is so simple. If there are eight spaces between each inch, then spaces are eighths. If there are sixteen spaces between each inch, then it is sixteenths. it is not that hard, don't make it hard.
Almost as simple as counting millimeters but not quite 😏
I bet if they laid out 16 dollars and the government took 1/2 they would understand 8 bucks pretty quickly, and then the wife took another 1/2 they’d get they only have a 1/4 left when they felt 4 bucks in their pocket .,lol..
Just like everything, it's simple, if you know it. And if you don't know it, it's not so simple. Got it?
I'm Canadian and I was never taught this and I've never had to use it and I'm 40 years old thanks for the video my man
